This past Halloween, I worked with Denver print/laser-cut shop, PUBLIC, to create some limited edition, Halloween themed coasters. Halloween lends itself perfectly for self-promotion, so I wanted to take the opportunity to do something fun and 'spooky' but a bit out of the box.
We decided to make coasters, a perfect gift that can be intricately designed and Halloween specific, but not the type of thing you throw out as soon as October's over.
The coasters are each composed of 3 separate layers:
- A thick black paper stock for the backing (which was custom engraved depending on who the coasters were sent to).
- A thin, bright slime green paper stock.
- A slightly thinner black stock, which was laser-cut so that the green would pop through the negative space.
The three pieces were then glued together for the finished products. I wanted to stay away from typical orange/black color scheme, so went with black/slime green instead, and therefore chose 4 typically green monsters to illustrate: Frankenstein's monster, the creature from the Black Lagoon, a zombie, and a Dia de los Muertos-inspired skeleton.
